Órgiva & The Alpujarra Hippies Tourists Lifestyle Choices

Took my ‘scoot’ up into the Alpujarra yesterday to grab a quick coffee with my best mate in Órgiva. On the ride up I took a few photos of the scenery to share with you guys, but only one shot in the town itself.

Why? Well, to be honest I’m not sure I’m that enamoured of this little hippy enclave. It almost falls between two cultures; hippy on one side and tourism on the other and the influx of tourists somehow seems to detract from the hippy feel of the place.

Known for its bohemian atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle, Órgiva has garnered a reputation as a hippy hideout in recent years. But is this reputation well-deserved, or is it just a commercialisation of the hippy culture?

Órgiva's roots as a hippy enclave can be traced back to the 1960s and 70s, when the town began to attract a wave of countercultural individuals seeking an alternative way of life. Drawn to the town's stunning natural surroundings, mild climate, and affordable cost of living, hippies from all over the world flocked to Órgiva to escape the pressures of modern society and live off the grid.

Today, Órgiva still retains much of its hippy charm, with quirky shops selling crystals, tie-dye clothing, and other hippy paraphernalia lining the town's narrow streets. However, in recent years, Órgiva has also seen an influx of tourists looking to experience the town's hippy culture for themselves. This has led to the development of a more commercialised version of the hippy lifestyle, with businesses catering to the needs of tourists and locals alike.

Despite this influx of tourists, Órgiva still maintains a laid-back vibe that sets it apart from other tourist hotspots in the region. The town's central plaza, with its bustling cafes and bars, is a popular meeting spot for locals and visitors alike, who come together to enjoy a leisurely meal or catch up with friends. The town's weekly market, held every Thursday, is also a must-visit for those looking to experience the true spirit of Órgiva, with stalls selling everything from organic produce to handmade crafts.

One of the highlights of Órgiva is its natural surroundings, which offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding. The town is surrounded by lush valleys and rugged mountains, making it a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The nearby Sierra Nevada National Park is also a popular destination for those looking to explore the region's stunning scenery and wildlife.

In recent years, Órgiva has also become a hub for alternative therapies and holistic healing practices, attracting those seeking to improve their physical and mental well-being. The town is home to a number of yoga studios, meditation centres, and wellness retreats, offering a range of classes and workshops to help visitors relax and rejuvenate. The laid-back atmosphere of Órgiva, combined with its natural beauty and spiritual energy, makes it the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with oneself.

While Órgiva certainly has its fair share of tourists and commercialisation, it still remains a unique and special place that continues to attract those seeking an alternative way of life. The town's strong sense of community and commitment to sustainable living make it a haven for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and embrace a simpler, more harmonious way of being.

But is Órgiva a true hippy hideout, or has it become a victim of its own success and commercialisation? While some may argue that the influx of tourists and businesses catering to their needs has diluted the town's authentic hippy spirit, others believe that Órgiva has managed to strike a balance between preserving its countercultural roots and embracing the opportunities that come with increased tourism.

One thing is for certain - Órgiva's hippy culture is not just a marketing ploy or passing trend. The town's commitment to sustainable living, organic farming, and alternative therapies is deeply ingrained in its residents' way of life, making it a true sanctuary for those seeking a more holistic and mindful existence.

Ultimately, whether Órgiva is a good place or a commercialisation of the hippy culture is a matter of personal perspective. For some, the town's bohemian atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle make it a haven of peace and tranquility, while others may see it as just another tourist destination cashing in on the hippy aesthetic.

Regardless of where you fall on this spectrum, one thing is certain - Órgiva is a town unlike any other, where nature, community, and spirituality come together to create a truly unique and special place. Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, a new way of life, or just a taste of the hippy lifestyle, Orgiva has something to offer everyone.
